How does spying work?

Concrete questions:

- Appart from beeing able to do new researches and recruiting new spies, what do you gain by leveling up the Tavern? Do spies gain a higher chance of not beeing detected?
- At the same time, if my Tavern is low level while beeing spied by someone who has a higher Tavern level, are the chances that I will detect his spies smaller?
- What difference does it make if you send more than one spy for one objective alone (like for spying Units)?

Why do my spies get killed every time a sabotage mission is succesfull.?

If its not succesfull then thats fair enough that they get killed.

but not when they complete the mission wether its only 1 spy or 4, they all get killed.
