If I have only one Paladin (which apparently is all we get?) Then is there a need to have a statue in other villages?

1. The answer to your first question is you only have 1 paladin.
2. The reason why you would want a status in other villages is if you wish to relocate your paladin to that village. Why is this important? Because relocating your paladin to other villages allow you to use weapons that you have unlocked in that village.

To expand on this, for instance, if you had your Paladin leading a defensive army for quick support and boosting spears defensive capability, you could relocate him to an offensive village with an axe weapon, for example, to boost the attack power when you hit another player.

Ok - so used to relocate Paladin for use in that village, or when attacking from that village. Does your Paladin's abilities tie into the level of the statue where he is located? Therefore if I have a level 5 statue in one village, then relocate paladin to a village with a level 1 statue, he basically is at level 1 when it comes to the technology that is associated with the statue where he is located?

Essentially relocate him to whatever army you want him to be in direct control of, offensively or defensively. Though for defensive purposes the Paladin only needs to be supporting the village under attack. You would put him with a defensive army to speed up their walking pace.
